He's 16!

Where has the time gone!? Jason is 16 today and he is such a great kid! He is easy going like his dad, a wonderful big brother, and he will still tell his mom "I love you" even when his friends are around. He honors the priesthood that he holds and works hard to be the young man the Lord needs him to be. Jason, we hope that you have a wonderful day! We love you and are so thankful that you are a part of our family!!

Fall Sports Update

Erin is playing volleyball for Eagle Middle School and she is having a great time. She has had 3 matches and each match she has had more playing time. She is consistently improving her skills and it is so fun to watch her play! (Erin is #9)

Jason has begun another cross country season and is doing quite well. He has had three meets so far and in two of them he has set personal bests. Currently his personal best is 20:18 for a 5K. He loves this and it sure is fun to watch him run!

17...Wow!!

Scott and I have been married 17 years today! I can remember when my parents celebrated anniversaries like this one and I thought that they were old (haha). That must mean that I am old now - at least in the eyes of my kids!! We were married in the Jordan River Temple on Thursday, August 20, 1992 at 1:30pm. Little did we know the adventures that awaited us on our journey together. Here is a snapshot of the past 17 years:

- We have moved 12 times

- We have lived in 6 different cities & 4 states

- Our 4 wonderful kids were born in 3 different cities & 3 different states

- Scott has worked for 5 different companies

- Kristin has managed to keep the same job (sometimes I wonder how!!)

I am very blessed to be married to such a wonderful man who loves me and takes such good care of our family. I am thankful that our family can be forever because with all the commotion and uncertainty in the world today, there are some absolutes that we can work towards and count on. Scott, I love you with all my heart. Thank you for "giving me wings to fly" and always loving me, especially when I deserve it the least. Happy Anniversary!!

Where did all the Band-Aids go?

Didn't we just have a full box of Band-Aids? Our kids want a bandage for every little scrape they get, even if there is NO blood at all. Conner came to me the other day and showed my a scratch that he wanted a bandage for. There was no blood, but in order to keep him happy, I went to the linen closet where we keep the bandages and got one down for him and helped put it on the scratch.

Fast forward ten minutes. I came upstairs and saw all this confetti from Band-Aid wrappers on the floor. Conner was sitting in the middle of it trying to pull down his pantleg so that I wouldn't see what he had done. I was laughing too hard to be mad because he had stuck bandages all the way up his leg! I guess if one cover the hurt, then all the rest just insulate the love.

Erin performed at the Spring concert.

Jason had his braces removed (doesn't he look excited?)!

Conner "graduated" from Kindergarten!

Scott & I took a drive to McCall on a Saturday. It was a beautiful day!

Memorial Day

We are so blessed to live in this country! Many people throughout the history of this great land have given their time and often times their lives to protect the divine rights afforded us in the Constitution. Thank you seems so small but it is how I feel. Thank you to all those who have served this country to keep us free and to keep us safe. Thank you to all of those who lived to return home to teach us the lessons learned in service to all of us. Thank you to those who have died to give the rest of us the hope for a bright future of liberty. Thank you to those who are serving this day to protect us all. Today, during all of our activities, let us take a moment or two to express our gratitude to those around us, but especially to our Father in Heaven for His blessings that are given to us each day.

Builders

I think all boys are builders. I remember many, many hours spent with Lincoln Logs and Legos just letting my imagination take over. Creations great and small, complex and simple brought much enjoyment to a simpler time in my life. Jason has all kinds of Legos too, but they are lots different from the ones I used to play with. He has Bionicles and Star Wars sets - those didn't exist in my day. I was content with the "city" sets, making houses and cars and other vehicles.

Tyler and Conner are builders too. Well Tyler is a builder, Conner is on demolition detail. Mostly when they build together, Tyler makes it stand up and Conner makes it fall down. This picture was a day when they were having fun together. Tyler is starting to be more interested in Legos than blocks, so I'm sure the days of cooperative building are numbered for them.

Time to Tango!

On Saturday last week, Jason participated in a 6-stake regional dance festival. It was held at the Taco Bell Arena on the campus at Boise State University. As you can see from the pictures, there were tons of kids there dancing. Our Stake had a part in the grand entry and finale with everyone else and then had an individual performance where they danced the tango. Other Stake's showcased line dancing or swing or cha-cha, but I think our kids did the best, even though I don't know the first thing about what's involved with dancing the tango!

Jason had lots of fun with his partner (she's a Junior and in the Beacon Light Ward). I sometimes wonder if he is getting more interested in girls now because he passed up an opportunity to take driver's education in order to not miss any dance practices! Maybe he is just becoming more of a social guy and likes to hang out with his friends. Either way it is fine with me; Jason is a very responsible 15 year old.

Eerie Silence

I don't know very many parents who have never had the experience of eerie silence in their house. You know what I am talking about - when you are sitting downstairs in the family room watching TV or something and there is no other ambient noise coming from upstairs or anywhere else. That is what I'm calling eerie silence. Normally you hear jumping, crashing, yelling, and the miscellaneous bump or thud. These are common noises when kids are in the house. No noise is so unusual. When things get quiet, you have to get up and investigate. Where are they? what are they doing? and so forth.

Kristin and I had a couple of those moments this past month and this is what we discovered. We caught Conner asleep under his basketball shoot out game. On a different day, we found Tyler asleep on his bed with the book still open to the last page he had been reading. Well at least they weren't tearing up the house!

My lamp is full

This was a wonderful weekend of being able to watch General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. What a blessing it is to be able to literally sit at the feet of the Prophets of God and be taught. The older I get the more I need the encouraging words of the Lord's chosen leaders. It is a special time of the year for me. My lamp is now full and I am determined to try a little harder to be a little better (as Pres. Hinckley would say).

Duke is done

As most of you know, Duke lost in the Sweet 16 to Villanova...and it wasn't really even close. Villanova was just the better team on that night. Duke had a great season this year and next year looks to be even better. They have some highly touted freshmen coming in and there are only 2 or 3 seniors on this years team. So, the good news is...only about 6 1/2 months until the next college basketball season begins :-) The final four is this weekend and there is the potential for some great games. It will be fun to watch!

Sweet Sixteen!

How sweet it is! Duke won both games this past weekend to earn a trip to the sweet sixteen round of the tournament. They will play this Thursday evening against Villanova. It will be a tough game. GO DUKE!!! So, as far as our brackets go: Jason - 1st; Tyler - 2nd; Kristin - 3rd; and Scott - 4th. It is so frustrating to get beaten by your kids who don't even watch as much basketball as I do :-)! Oh well! I am having a great time watching all the games.

Let the madness begin!!

The best time of the year for sports is here...finally!!! The NCAA men's basketball tournament starts tomorrow...all the food has been purchased, and the brackets are all filled out! All of us have filled out brackets, except for Erin. She doesn't like watching sports on tv so she said "what's the point!" I will be spending a good deal of time the next few days at Jodi's watching the games. I'm not sure how my brackets will do this year...hopefully I'll do really well. But, as long as my favorite team - DUKE BLUEDEVILS - does well I'll be happy. If not, I may be in mourning for a few days:-)!! As we say in our family, March Madness is considered a holiday!!! So, your favorite CBS shows from Thurs. - Sun. will not be seen for the next few weeks. Sit back and enjoy the best sport on the face of the earth (and cheer for Duke)!!

Court of Honor

Jason had a court of honor tonight in which he was awarded three more merit badges: Safety, Emergency Prepardness, and Personal Management. He also earned the Varsity Scout Letter. He is well on his way to getting his Eagle Scout award. He only needs to finish up on two more merit badges and then come up with and execute his project. We are trying to keep him on track for the project, but he is having difficulty figuring out what to do - he must get that from his dad. Congratulations Jason, keep up the hard work and hopefully before your birthday this year you will have your Eagle Scout! Did I mention that there is no driver's license until this milestone is acheived?

Grateful for Thumbs

Yes I am grateful for my thumbs, particularly my right thumb at the moment. The picture doesn't do it justice, but you can clearly see the blood blister on my cuticle. The left side of the fingernail is deep purple. I suppose I will end up losing the nail, but we'll have to see how that plays out. Yesterday while Kristin and I were constructing a small retaining wall in our garden, we needed to split one of the concrete blocks into two pieces. I got out the small sledgehammer and started to chip away at the block. I was making good progress, but was obviously getting tired, so my concentration lapsed for a split second. That was all it took - the butt end of the sledge hit the ground first and then ricocheted into my right hand, which was holding the block steady, and hit my thumb squarely on the nail. All I can say is OUCH!!!! I am proud that the first words that leapt to my mind were not swear words, but I did do a lot hopping up and down with spouts of loud gibberish. I came in and started to get an ice pack on it right away. Kristin was not too sympathetic to my plight, but she did help me with the ice. I think she was on the verge of laughing her head off the whole time.

I am grateful for my thumbs, you come to take for granted the fact that opposable digits are essential for grasping and manipulating things. Even doing small things becomes quite complicated when one is deprived of full use of the thumb. Being a left-hander in a right-handed world has it's benefits, but even leftys are mostly ambidextrous and do quite a few things with their right hand. Take me for example, I still do buttons, zippers and hit the space bar on the keyboard with my right hand leading out. Playing the piano is somewhat of a challenge now because the right hand carries the melody. You would be surprised how many chords you need to use the thumb for - the stretch between fingers 2 and 5 is not all that far and tends to be uncomfortable too. Try tying your shoes when the thumb is tender. Even shaking hands can leave reminders that the thumb is sensitive - some people have better aim than others. All in all, I think I will make a full recovery, I am just glad that it was not my index finger - how would I run the mouse?

Unfortunate Good-bye

Today Kody found a new home. Unfortunately we had to help him find a new place to live. The allergies that he created for many in our family was just too much to live with every day. Scott has especially had the worst reactions of all of us. His arms would always break out in hives after playing with Kody and he has felt like he has had a constant, mild asthma attack for months. The family seemed to also have lost interest in Kody and we didn't feel that was fair to him. We found a family for him that has a large yard he will be able to run around in and they have another lab that he'll be able to play with. Over all, I think that he will be really happy at his new home. As Scott has always said, we probably will not have any more pets that have four legs and fur!

Beautiful Idaho!

Scott in his Yak-herder's hat trying to stay warm!

This past weekend Scott had the opportunity to travel to Stanley, ID in the heart of the Sawtooth Mountains to go snow-mobiling. It was cold (-23 Sunday morning), but Scott had a great time. How could you not when this is what you see all day long!
